Osama bin Laden has been captured in Pakistan?

The reason they didn't mention this at the convention is that it would spoil the October surprise. Note that they have had Osama captive for WEEKS!

Is this why they didn't seem to care about the hatefest during the convention? Do they think this will create the bounce that will lift Bush back into the White House? Is that why Bush seems so smug?

Timing is everything. Too soon, and the Islamic world will have time to rise up in total fury over seeing Osama in chains, and Amuricans won't understand why we can't proclaim we got our guy so we are done with the Afghani/Iraqi wars and are taking our toys home. Too late, and people won't be able to recognize the 'bringingtojustice' might of Bush and vote him in.

Word is they're going to announce it on September 11th.

September 11th would have been too soon and far too obvious. I think they've had Osama since the first of this year, if not sooner. Shrub knew he would need an ace in the hole to pull this election out of the crapper.

Look for the announcement no more than 4 or 5 days before the election. Not only does Bush not want to give terrorist organizations time to retaliate, he also doesn't want anybody else to have time to look too closely at the circumstances surrounding the "surprise" capture of Bin Laden so close to the elections.

Of course, there is always the possibility that Shrub's people will realize they can't get away with it, in which case, the announcement won't happen. But if that happens, look for the "terror alert" to be at condition super-we-really-mean-it-this-time red on election day. This of course will require that the elections are postponed indefinitely, until the Shrub White House can "assure the safety of all American voters" at the polls.

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they *aren't* really after me :)

Good point. One of the things they have learned is that they the media will not respond as quickly to question this adminstration as they are to question others.

If they announce close to the election, then there will be less time to verify the timing of the arrest/capture. If the Democrats DO question the timing the republicans will be saying, "What? Don't you WANT him to be captured? What difference does it make WHEN we captured him? We needed to ask him questions to find his henchmen and they couldn't know he was in custody. Did you want us to blow the chances that they would hide when they knew he was caught?"

You might have noticed the speed at which the press finally got around to blowing holes in the Swift Boat Liars stories.
Compare that with the speed in which they reported on the potential holes in the new Guard documents. Less than 24 hours!

Spoko, I quite agree. There is no question that the majority of the media in the US is pro-Bush. Given a small enough window, the pro-Bush media will happily claim they just didn't have an adequate opportunity to confirm the circumstances of the capture.

And, of course, your assessment of how the White House would explain it if they *did* get caught is right on the money. As with so much of the rhetoric going on since 9/11/2001, to question is to be unpatriotic.

It sickens me to see this country ruled by a fear-monger.
